Andrea Schmidt & Emilee Preble tied the knot at the Makai Golf Course in Princeville. Ranking in the Top 5 most scenic golf courses by National Geographic Traveler Magazine, I knew this job wasn't exactly going to be the toughest. The ceremony took place on a narrow bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Looking left revealed Lumahai and the distant Makana Mountain also known as Bali Hai. The Hawaiian name for this pyramid-shaped mountain peak is Makana, meaning "gift from heaven". The movie South Pacific featured the mountain as a forbidden exotic location called Bali Hai. Just off the ceremony ridge and to the right lied Queen's Bath, a beautiful turquoise, naturally formed swimming hole carved into a lava shelf.
The original "Queen's Bath" was located in Kalapana on the Big Island of Hawai?i. It was formed after a lava tube collapsed and filled with fresh water supplied by natural springs. In ancient times only the Ali?i (Royalty) were permitted entry to the sacred waters. In 1983 Kilauea Volcano erupted and in 1987 the original site was destroyed by lava flow. Only after the original site on the Big Island of Hawai?i was destroyed did the location on Kauai become better known as "Queen's Bath". This tide pool was used as a royal bathing place. It was also used as a place of relaxation when an Ali?i needed to "wash off the stress". Queen's Bath used to be called Keanalele and for a mound with the most concentrated complex petroglyphs in Hawai'i. The mound was used as a depository for umbilical cords of infants.
Clouds loomed over the mountains only to provide a dramatic sunset before giving way to rain just as the reception began under the roof of Post Cards Cafe in Hanalei. Salsa music rang throughout the night as toasts were given, people danced and everyone reflected on an amazing wedding.
